Kevin and I met through Thumbtack. He was looking for a strategically focused photographer who understood the importance in building his brand as a motivational speaker. Previously, he had photos taken for his new website, but his creative team was reluctant to use them. Although the photographs were good, they lacked the necessary energy that Kevin is known for. This is especially true when Kevin shares his passion about his life’s mission—being a Joy Warrior.
After a couple of Skype chats with Kevin, we conferenced in his Creative Director, Joe Edelman of ThatWebGuyJoe. It was crucial for the three of us to be on the same page — it was clearly very important for Kevin to showcase his energy and enthusiasm in the photographs. After all Kevin is the brand. Joe's creative direction was crystal clear and I knew exactly his goal with the “finished” product.
As we were talking on Skype, I realized Kevin had another concern, "What do I wear for the shoot?" He was willing to purchase a new wardrobe, but he wasn't sure how to go about selecting the “right” outfits. I offered to assist him on a Sunday morning shopping adventure. We had so much fun! I helped Kevin select all his outfits for the shoot. It was important for me to accompany Kevin shopping, so that he could meet me in person before the shoot. This was tremendously helpful as we quickly built rapport which ultimately helped him relax for the day of the shoot.
As I prepared for the shoot the night before, I wrote down a few thought-provoking questions for Kevin. This placed Kevin at ease and made him quite comfortable in front of the camera. I needed him to forget he was in front of a lens so he could shine in his zone of genius—motivational speaking. And shine he did as I was able to capture Kevin in his element.
